Dr Matthew Winter

Overview
Dr Matthew Winter is a qualified Urological Surgeon and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) with a keen interest and sub-specialised training in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.
He is an appointed Urologist at Royal North Shore Public Hospital, Northern Beaches Hospital and at Nepean Public Hospital. He operates privately at North Shore Private Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital and Nepean Private Hospital. He offers urological services to both public and private patients.
Education, Qualifications and Advanced Robotic Urological Oncology Training
Dr Winter completed his medical degree at Flinders University (graduating with honours), and then completed his internship and residency at Monash Hospital in Victoria whilst also obtaining a Post-Graduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy at Melbourne University.
Dr Winter then undertook the six year Advanced Surgical Training for Urology in Victoria and New South Wales including an Australian Fellowship at Nepean Public Hospital where he initially gained his robotic surgery credentials. He was then accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
To further advance his urological skills in order to provide future patients with the best service possible, Dr Winter completed an additional two year international fellowship in ‘Urology and Advanced Robotic and Laparoscopic Urology’ at the prestigious Institute of Urology, University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, USA.
During this two year intensive fellowship, Dr Winter worked alongside and was mentored by world leaders, including Dr Inderbir Gill, Rene Sotelo, Mihir Desai, Monish Aron, Sia Daneshmand, Anne Schuckman and Homan Djaladat in hundreds of minimally invasive surgery cases (both robotic and laparoscopic) and open cases.

Dr Winter treats all urological cancers and general urological conditions. His expertise includes:-
Prostate Cancer – robotic radical prostatectomy & robotic salvage prostatectomy
Enlarged Prostate Gland (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)) – robotic simple prostatectomy
Kidney Cancer- robotic partial/radical nephrectomy & robotic IVC thrombectomy
Bladder Cancer – robotic cystectomy with urinary diversion (ileal conduit or neobladder)
Testis Cancer – robotic retroperitoneal robotic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) or open midline extra-peritoneal RPLND

Focus on Teaching & Training
Dr Winter has a keen interest in education and teaching. Throughout his career he has been involved in the clinical training of medical students, junior residents and urology registrars. Yearly he provides a training program for NSW trainees undertaking their final fellowship exams and in 2014 he was awarded the Teacher of the Year.
Dr Winter was the NSW and National Representative of Trainees on the Board of Urology and the Royal College of Surgeons Trainee Representative in 2014 and 2015. He has been recognised as an Australian Medical Association NSW Finalist as Registrar of the Year, former Director of the Nepean Urology Research Group (NURG) and is the Co-Clinical Lead for ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Founder of Specialist Productions & Co-Author of '“Fellowship Urology Handbook: A Concise Guide to Urology”
To benefit his patients’ experience, Dr Winter founded Specialist Productions; a company, which produces patient educational videos, to better inform and equip them about the operation at hand. Dr Winter’s passion for medicine further extends to his contribution to research.
He has published widely, presented at national and international meetings and has authored a textbook “Fellowship Urology Handbook: A Concise Guide to Urology” for future urology trainees and fellows. Dr Winter is also a reviewer for both Australian and international Urology Journals including the Journal of Urology.
Interests
Dr Winter is a caring and thoughtful family man who understands firsthand what it is like to go through medical issues. His experiences have taught him how important it is to understand his patient needs and how best to approach them at each stage of their care. Outside of his urological practice, Dr Winter is a passionate golfer and musician.
